BID TITLE: FISHING VESSEL CHARTER for Support of Ocean Salmon Research

PURPOSE: The vessel, with adequate crew, will be contracted for an ocean test fishery for pink and chum salmon entering Prince William Sound for the period stated above. The test fishery locations will be in Hinchinbrook Entrance and Montague Strait (Figure 1). The purpose of the charter is to collect data in support of the wild and hatchery salmon interaction project conducted by Prince William Sound Science Center.

The vessel will serve as a platform for the deployment and retrieval of a 200 fathom experimental (multiple mesh) drift gillnet at three stations in Hinchinbrook Entrance and six stations in Montague Strait in an ocean test fishery. Crew will be responsible for capture and collection of fish samples in a manner directed by research staff, as well as for logging information about each set. The scientific samples will be iced and delivered to PWSSC personnel. Fish caught in excess of required samples will be bled and maintained in ice to assure quality, and delivered for sale to a commercial buyer under the Alaska Department of Fish and Game Test Fishery permit. Proceeds from the fish sales go to ADFG. Each set of stations will be fished twice a week (sample schedule: Monday fish 3 stations at Hinchinbrook, Tuesday fish 6 stations at Montague, Wednesday no fishing/delivery of samples to PWSSC, Thursday fish 3 stations at Hinchinbrook, Friday fish 6 stations at Montague, Saturday delivery of samples to PWSSC, Sunday no fishing).

The daily surveys are expected to last less than 12 hours per day and involve transiting across PWS to reach the fishing sites and to deliver the fish samples to the PWSSC. The desire is for the vessel to anchor in the evenings between fishing sites to allow time for maintenance of equipment.

PWSSC will supply the research equipment (experimental gillnet, patch web, and fish hold bags) but the vessel charter is responsible for maintenance and repair of the equipment. The vessel charter will be responsible for maintaining a detailed log of fishing activities such as: latitude and longitude, soak times, total catch per set, and species. The vessel charter will also be responsible for collecting a specified number of species per set, storing, and delivering the samples and data to PWSSC.
